Microscopic Dermal Reconstruction

What is Fractional CO2 Laser Resurfacing?

The Fractional Carbon Dioxide (CO2) laser is an ablative resurfacing treatment considered the gold standard for correcting severe skin texture irregularities. Unlike older generations of lasers that removed the entire surface layer of skin at once, fractional technology breaks the laser beam into thousands of microscopic, pixelated light zones. This allows the laser to penetrate deeply into the dermis while leaving tiny bridges of untouched skin around each micro-injury point. By combining deep thermal destruction with healthy surrounding reservoirs, the body triggers a rapid, profound cellular healing response that clears away aged cells and builds a fresh skin matrix.

Comfort and Advanced Clinical Care

What is the Fractional CO2 Laser procedure like?

Because a fractional C02 laser is a powerful medical treatment that interacts with deeper layers of the skin, your comfort is our absolute priority. On the day of your session at our Jacksonville Beach clinic, we apply a high-potency topical numbing cream to the treatment area for roughly 45 to 60 minutes. For deeper treatments, local nerve blocks or light sedation may be utilized.

As the device passes over your skin, you will hear a rapid clicking sound and feel a localized sensation that patients frequently describe as a sequence of hot, prickly pinpricks. The focused ablation instantly vaporizes damaged tissue and creates a localized coagulation zone that forces immediate tightening of existing collagen fibers. The entire face can be treated in about 30 minutes, after which a soothing, protective ointment is immediately applied.

After Care

Facial Care - Keep Skin Moisturized

Every 4 hours (for the next 3-5 days):

  • Wash with Cetaphil (Removing all of Aquaphor)
  • Wet gauze and gently scrub any yellow/white skin crusting
  • Pat Dry
  • Apply thin layer of Aquaphor (be sure to apply with tongue blades as, dipping fingers into tub can introduce bacteria.)
  • Some areas may bleed (just apply slight pressure) scrub around it and prevent scabbing by keeping moist with Aquaphor.
  • You may wear contact lenses; be extra cautious to prevent Aquaphor from dripping into your eye.
  • Expect to be RED, BURNING, SWOLLEN, ITCHY, GREASY, PEELING.
  • DO NOT SCRATCH LASERED AREAS-may wear gloves/socks at night.
  • Do not exercise the day of treatment. You may resume in 3-5 days, only when you are free of raw areas.
  • Do not apply make-up, moisturizers, or other skin care products for 7-10 days or until released by Dr. Trimas.
  • Avoid any sun exposure: wear hat/sunglasses/sunscreen when outside.

The healing process will take 1-2 weeks, depending on the depth of the laser. Be patient and take time to heal. You will love your fresh, new look!

Correcting Deep Structural Damage

What conditions does Fractional CO2 Laser address?

This intensive therapy is designed to rebuild skin from within for dramatic correction of several types of damage:

Deep Static Wrinkles: Erases stubborn creases around the eyes, cheeks, and forehead that persist even when your face is relaxed.

Severe Acne and Surgical Scars: Breaks down rigid, dimpled fibrous bands to level out uneven depressions.

Advanced Actinic Damage: Vaporizes rough, pre-cancerous sun patches and heavy sun spots.

Perioral "Smoker's" Lines: Smooths vertical lines tracking around the lip borders.

A Structural Transformation

What are the benefits of Fractional CO2 Laser Resurfacing?

Choosing a Fractional (CO2) laser treatment at Couture Plastic Surgery provides powerful, long-term structural changes that outpace non-ablative alternatives:

Unmatched Texture Smoothing: No other non-surgical treatment can level deep-pitted acne scars or severe crinkling skin with the same efficacy in a single session.

Instant Dynamic Tightening: The deep thermal heat causes immediate contraction of collagen proteins, providing an instant foundational lift.

Significant Single-Treatment Clearance: While mild lasers require a series of sessions, dramatic changes are frequently accomplished in just one or two Fractional (CO2) appointments.

Customized Depth Control: Your provider can modulate the power and micro-beam density to safely match your specific skin thickness and aesthetic concerns.

Exploring Your Options

Am I a candidate for Fractional CO2 Laser Resurfacing?

The ideal candidate is an individual with light-to-medium skin tones (Fitzpatrick scales I–III) who wishes to eliminate prominent signs of aging or deep scarring. It's important to have realistic expectations regarding the necessary healing time. Because the laser targets water in the skin and generates substantial thermal energy, individuals with naturally dark skin tones should avoid aggressive ablative settings due to a significantly elevated risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).

Safety Warning: This procedure is strictly contraindicated for anyone who has used oral acne medications (isotretinoin) within the past 6 to 12 months, or anyone with an active infection or open wounds in the treatment zone.

Navigating the Peeling Phase

Fractional CO2 Laser Recovery

Recovering from a Fractional (CO2) treatment requires careful adherence to aftercare guidelines. For the first 2 to 3 days, your skin will look and feel like it has experienced a significant sunburn—swelling, warmth, and heavy redness are completely normal. During this initial window, you will need to keep your skin constantly coated in a thick, healing emollient (like Aquaphor) to maintain a sterile, hydrated protective barrier.

Around days 4 through 7, the old, damaged surface layers will naturally begin to flake, bronze, and peel away. It is critical that you never pick, scratch, or peel this skin yourself, as doing so can trigger scarring or permanent pigmentation changes; let it shed naturally. Most patients feel comfortable returning to public settings and wearing light makeup by day 7 to 10. Direct sun exposure must be completely avoided during your recovery, and broad-spectrum SPF 30+ must be applied daily to protect your new skin.

Revel in a Beautiful Complexion

Fractional CO2 Laser Results

Once the peeling cycle finishes at the two-week mark, your fresh skin will look pink, remarkably smooth, and visibly clear. This pinkness will gradually fade to your natural skin tone over the following weeks.

Your results will follow a multi-stage timeline. The immediate texture enhancement and clearance of dark sunspots are apparent within the first 14 days. However, because the deep columns of thermal energy trigger a new collagen production cycle, your skin structure will continue to actively tighten, smooth out, and firm up over the next 3 to 6 months. When paired with medical-grade skincare and strict sun protection, the dramatic anti-aging benefits of a Fractional (CO2) laser treatment can last for several years.

Fractional CO2 Laser Frequently Asked Questions

With our clinical-strength topical numbing creams and specialized cooling techniques, the discomfort is highly manageable. Most patients describe it as a warm, intense pricking or snapping sensation. After the session concludes, your skin will feel hot and sunburned for a few hours, which can be eased with cold compresses.

Because the Fractional $CO_2$ laser is incredibly powerful, many patients achieve their ideal aesthetic goals after just one single session. For individuals dealing with exceptionally deep surgical scars or very severe, pitted acne scarring, a second treatment spaced a few months apart may be recommended to reach optimal smoothness.

The heavy, post-sunburn redness typically transitions into a light pink color by day 7 to 10, which is easily concealed with mineral makeup. This faint pink hue is a positive sign that your body is actively building fresh collagen and blood vessels, and it will entirely fade back to your natural skin color within a few weeks.

Deep, traditional ablative (CO2) lasers carry an elevated risk of causing hyperpigmentation (dark marks) or hypopigmentation (light spots) on darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick types IV–VI). If you have a darker complexion, our team will evaluate your skin during a consultation and may recommend safer, alternative resurfacing options like customized chemical peels or microneedling.

You should avoid intense cardiovascular exercise, heavy weight lifting, hot tubs, and heavy sweating for at least 7 to 10 days following your procedure. Sweating heavily while the skin barrier is actively peeling and healing can cause severe irritation and increases your vulnerability to localized skin infections.
